Two women who will trek the Great Wall of China for charity will be hosting a stall at Grantham carnival in Wyndham Park this weekend.

Friends Julie North and Louise Cooper hope to boost their fund-raising ahead of the trip and are getting fit in preparation for the trek in October. Julie, 55, a freelance social worker, and her friend from schooldays Louise, 54, a teacher, will be raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

They have been training at the Ramada Health Club in Marston in preparation for the trek in October.

Julie said: “We have both experienced health issues that have affected our ability to train. However we are back in the gym again and beginning to feel some significant improvements to our general health and fitness. We attended an information day in London recently where we had the opportunity to meet some of our fellow trekkers and learn more about the trip. We left feeling equally excited and horror-struck! If ever we thought this challenge was going to be a holiday, that idea is no more – trekking day after day on The Great Wall of China will be a serious challenge to both our physical and mental strength. There is still much work to be done in preparation before October.

“We are working hard at fundraising and have now raised over £2,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society. We continue to receive excellent support from the Ramada Health Club. Members have participated in events organised by the Health Club team, with all profits going into our fund-raising pot. Members also purchase our crafts which are for sale at reception – our ‘bottle bird feeders’ have been very popular! Members of the team are also supportive – Will, Health Club Assistant has literally been selling his clothes to help us! A rail of unwanted items continues to raise additional money.

“We had a stall on Denton Street Market on May Day, and have stalls at the Grantham Carnival and Dysart Park Family Fun Day. We are hoping for good weather and lots of people to support us. Come along and meet us.”

Julie and Louisee are also holding a race night on June 23 at Grantham Squash Club. Tickets cost £10 which includes food and a free raffle. Tickets are available from Mike on 07941 752272.
