A new college is offering guaranteed places for Grantham teeangers wanting a career in engineering, science or maths and the chance for local engineering companies to shape their future workforce.

University Technical College, in Lincoln, will open in September. It is non-fee paying and can accommodate between 500 and 800 students.

It will specialise in engineering with science, mixing core education and technical studies and is equipped with industry-standard facilities as a centre of excellence.

Speaking at a launch in Grantham, hosted by South Kesteven District Council, college principal Dr Rona Mackenzie outlined plans to offer five per cent of places there to students from Grantham in both Years 10 and 12.

“We guarantee every student a successful route into employment, education and training,” she said. “We want to encourage youngsters to get jobs in Lincolnshire and help build the county’s engineering and science base.

“We will be producing the next generation of engineers and scientists and providing a direct link for regional businesses to access the talent coming through the education system.”

Dr Mackenzie urged Grantham employers to get in touch to help shape the skills and knowledge of their future employees. The offer includes shaping curriculum content, work placements, delivering guest lectures, providing advice on training or practical equipment demonstrations and supporting employer-led student projects.

Councillor Frances Cartwright, SKDC portfolio holder for economic development, who has personal experience of running a precision engineering company, said the college was a welcome development.

“What a great opportunity for boys and girls to tap into an education programme which will massively enhance their employment prospects in the world of engineering and science,” she said.

“This is also a great chance for employers to have their say in their future workforce and skills needs. It offers the prospect of us growing our skilled engineers within a very few years.”
