Grantham householders urged to make sure they recycle the correct items

Householders are being urged to take extra time this summer to recycle the correct items in their silver bins and clear bags.

That’s the message from South Kesteven District Council to residents to help the council maintain good rates of recycling.

Residents can remind themselves of what they can recycle by visiting www.southkesteven.gov.uk/recyclinglist.

Ensuring recycling is kept free of items that should be in black bins, pink bags or be taken to the local Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRC) is key to a more sustainable environment for everyone in the district. Contaminated loads are more costly to deal with.

The HWRCs on Alexandra Road in Grantham and at South Fen Road in Bourne are open 9am to 4pm every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Residents can also ensure they have greener barbecues by remembering much of the waste produced can be recycled - including all paper, card and cardboard, glass bottles and jars, cans, tins, empty plastic bottles.

For picnics it also advised where possible to use reusable crockery rather than disposable knives and forks and paper plates and buy loose fruit and vegetables rather than food in disposable packaging.

Bins and bags should be placed at the edge of properties or collection points out by 7.30am on the day of collection but at the earliest the night before.

SKDC’s Executive Manager for Environment Ian Yates said: “We’d like residents to help us decrease what we send to our energy from waste site by continuing to recycle without the contamination.

“Let’s increase the numbers of correct items we put in silver bins or clear bags during the summer. It’s really easy to do with just a quick check online to see what you should put in.

“Summer events see us eat and drink more as we enjoy more social time in good weather and around major sporting events so it’s important we recycle carefully at this time of year. Always ensure the right items go in the right bins or bags.”
