Grantham Journal column: We have challenges – if we work together we can be a better trust

As a trust we are always working to improve our services to ensure they are safe and are providing the best possible care for our patients.

We know one of our biggest strengths is our staff and they do extraordinary things every day – for our patients, for our organisation, for each other.

Since April, when we received the disappointing news that the CQC rated the trust as ‘inadequate’, our staff have worked hard to draw up a long-term plan to turnaround the safety and quality of our services.

These link to our 2021 long-term plan which is our roadmap to the future.

The plan covers 17 areas to address the concerns raised by the CQC including improving outpatients, treatment of sepsis and control of infection. We will share further details in the coming months.

Over the last few months we have:

n Approved a people strategy to transform our workforce;

n Visited Morecambe Bay and Salford trusts to learn from those who have improved greatly and also the best;

n Launched sepsis boxes;

n Achieved 100 per cent performance in the Sepsis 6 care bundle completed within an hour and achieved 100 per cent performance in treating patients with suspected sepsis with antibiotics within one hour (both as at May 15).

ULHT has many big challenges to overcome and we know it won’t be easy. But I know that if all our staff work together, we work with the public and patients, we live and breathe our values, and keep our focus on our patients, ULHT can be bigger and better than ever.
