The plans for a newly expanded Grantham cinema sounds great and is just adding to the potential success stories for our town.
Alongside the four-screen development, bringing the total to six, for Reel Cinema on St Catherine’s Road we will see space for three restaurants and office space. These are exactly the kind of attractions that pull people away from Grantham to places such as Newark, Lincoln and Nottingham.
Having a focused ‘cultural quarter’, as the proposals refer to it, will provide not only the immediate physical attractions but could also see businesses want to come to town and want to be near the new, exciting area.
Generating an initial buzz is perhaps the most important part of moving the town forward and the cultural quarter would certainly help this.
It will be very interesting to see the results of Monday’s SKDC cabinet meeting to discuss the Grantham Area Action Plan. We could potentially see huge investment coming to several areas of Grantham in an effort to transform the town centre.
All of this is stringent on a great many factors, not least of which is getting funding. But considering the potential this can have, it would be a huge shame for the budget to fall through on this plan.
While many bemoan the short-term troubles that come along these kind of developments such as traffic disruption and noise, we have to keep sight of the long term benefit this proposal and others like it are hoping to bring to Grantham.
