Grantham Journal letter: I support proposal but it falls short of a fitting tribute

I am very pleased to support Ray Wootten’s suggestion that the new link road should be named Lady Thatcher Way, but do not feel that this goes anywhere near a proper recognition of our famous daughter!

It is interesting to hear that a 13-year-old German boy can see the present lack of pride in our town!

The arguments in your newspaper have been rumbling on for over 12 years now, and I have tried to persuade your readers of the short-sightedness of our failure to give Lady Thatcher proper recognition. I am heartened to know that Grantham Museum are pressing on with plans for a statue, but sorry to read that a member of the Grantham Civic Society feels that, 24 years after her resignation as PM, “the time is still not right for such recognition”. What are we all so frightened of? Let us show the world that “Grantham is Great”!

May I urge your readers to join me in contributing to Grantham Museum’s fund-raising efforts towards a statue for the town, plus improvements to our museum?
