Grantham Journal letter: Locate all the stalls in Market Place

At last a sensible proposal to save the market from none other than the market supervisor.

Well said Gary Taylor. His idea is to condense the market to create more of a ‘bustling atmosphere’.

The sad part is that while Grantham market has seen depletion in recent years so others such as Melton Mowbray, Newark and Stamford have been flourishing. And what do they have in common? Yes, they are all compact with nice atmospheres.

The only point I would disagree with Gary on is the location. I would like to see the stalls in the Market Square. In fact I was under the impression that part of the purpose of recently spending £1m-plus on the Market Square was to accommodate the market. All the current stalls and many more could be fitted in comfortably. This would then free up Wide Westgate for parking and access to Guildhall Street. It would also be preferable from a weather perspective as at times Westgate can be like a wind tunnel.

So how about it South Kesteven District Council? But don’t leave it too long as there will be no market left the way things are going.
