Grantham Journal letter: Mess left by mindless few ruined this scenic view

Have your say

I am a resident of Harlaxton and the college at Harlaxton Manor generously permits the public to walk through its beautiful grounds with the only proviso that they keep it tidy and take away any mess and litter.

Recently, while walking by the Manor lake, I was horrified to see the disgusting mess, as in the photograph, that some individuals had left the previous day.

A group of thoughtless individuals had a barbecue at the water’s edge - presumably without permission - and on departing had just thrown their litter everywhere with no attempt even to bag it up.

There were drink cartons, raw food, cooked food, bags, opened tin cans, and even a pen knife strewn across the waters edge and field, plus ashes on the field which is a potential fire hazard considering the hot weather.

In the end, I cleaned it up myself.

I just do not understand the attitude of people who go to a place of scenic beauty and then mess it up.

The sad part of it is that the only people who will suffer the consequences of these deliberate and mindless actions are those who appreciate the scenery and look after it.
