Grantham Journal letter: Not token, these are real efforts
I note an email from your reader David Pepperdine in the edition of March 11 complaining about the air pollution in Grantham.
In the letter he cited that he has seen no measures put in place to reduce the pollution except for a “token” announcement that there are to be four electric vehicles in the South Kesteven District Council’s car fleet.
SKDC are committed to improving the air quality in Grantham, and maintaining a low level of pollution across our district.
That is why we are the first council in Lincolnshire to introduce electric vehicles into our pool fleet (the vehicles are already ordered) and also why we are working with partners in the energy industry to deliver a public electric vehicle charging infrastructure in our town centre car parks as soon as possible.
These are not token gestures, but real efforts, and shows SKDC leading by example.
I recently presented the annual air quality management report to the councils environment overview and scrutiny committee, which showed good general progress, and we work as a partnership with many other agencies in delivering a better air quality environment.
Our commitment is one of the most significant to date in its contribution to reducing pollution in the town, but we hope that setting this example will encourage other motorists to invest in hybrid or electric vehicles too.
With the significant and imminent commencement of the next phase of the Grantham southern relief road, it’s clear to see that SKDC is promoting highly relevant changes in infrastructure and vehicles which should lower pollution levels and reduce congestion.
The SKDC pool car fleet is extensively used for the vast number of services across the predominantly rural 365 sq miles of South Kesteven. It’s going to be great that nearly a 1000 miles a day can be electric miles in the very near future!
This is really significant progress and its happening right now.
