Mermory Lane: A Grantham love story from 1990.

The Journal front page 25 years ago had a heartwarming love story.

It related how blind man Norman Lack, 66, was to marry the woman whose voice he fell in love with after hearing it on tapes from Grantham’s Talking Newspaper.

Norman first met Gilly Boden, 66, under the bridge at Barrowby Road two years before, and she recommended the Talking Newspaper.

Norman told the Journal: “I got the Talking Newspaper two days later. I fell in love with her voice to begin with.”

As Norman had only just moved to Grantham from Kettering, he didn’t know many people. Gilly would also join him for park walks, and together they went to the Talking Newspaper’s annual meeting. They are pictured with guide dog Holly.
