Grantham Journal Memory Lane: No way we’d forget Foreman Fred

We always like to remember past members of the Journal team.

That’s why we were delighted when Cheryl Hunter, niece of former compositor Fred Tilley, turned up at our office with old photos and mementos from her relative’s time with the paper.

These included the retirement gift pictured above, and lots of snaps with both old faces and old technology that were integral to the Journal.

We will feature these photographs in the coming weeks, but would like to say a big thank you to Cheryl who made the trip all the way from her home in Surrey to ensure her uncle was remembered.

Fred became foreman of the composing room, while his wife Joyce worked in the Journal’s reception.

He was on the Russian convoys during the Second World War, and was an active member of the community of Harrowby Lane Methodist Church.

He was also a keen dancer, and regular at the old Cherry Tree pub in Harrowby Lane.
