Grantham Journal Memory Lane: The real Dad’s Army

While rummaging through old boxes of photographs, Chris Bennett found some amazing snaps, and kindly emailed them in to the Journal.

The first, seen above, is of The Home Guard in Grantham. Chris’s father, Cyril Bennett, is pictured sitting on the front row, first on the left. Cyril was also part of Aveling Barford’s team of fire watchers, pictured below in front of the engineering firm’s canteen.

Chris added: “We lived in Mount Street in 1941, when I was born, and when I was about 3 years old I remember my dad’s steel hat and uniform hanging on the back of the stairs door.”
