A Grantham student made an impressive start on University Challenge when he appeared with his team from Downing College, Cambridge, last week.
Tom Claxton’s team won its first round match against St John’s College, Oxford, 260-115, facing quick-fire questions from quizmaster Jeremy Paxman on the BBC2 show. Tom, 20, lives on the Manthorpe estate in Grantham and is now in his third year at Cambridge, studying Natural Sciences. He is a former pupil of Cliffedale Primary School and King’s School. Tom took part in an entrance quiz at college to try and get into the team and secured a high enough score to get involved. He said: “It was good to go on TV, but I was quite nervous as well. Filming sessions took place in February, April and May, so the whole show has already been filmed.” Tom, who was born in King’s Lynn and moved to Grantham when he was four years old, did well for his team, answering several questions correctly. Needless to say, how well Downing College did on the show is being kept under wraps.
