A new health and wellbeing service will be introduced as part of the changes being made at Grantham Meres leisure centre.

Led by the Health and Wellbeing Manager, Clive Henderson, the new service will include a Healthy Walks programme, a 12 week GP Exercise Referral Scheme and No Strings Badminton.

The Healthy Walks programme is part of Walking for Health where groups of people meet to take part in free walking programmes ranging from one to three miles in length. The walks will start and end at the leisure centre and will be led by a qualified walk leader. Walking has been proven to help reduce blood pressure and assist weight management as well as reducing the risk of falls, preventing osteoporosis and Type 2 diabetes.

The GP Exercise Referral Scheme is for adults over the age of 18 with a medical condition that would benefit from exercise. Funded by Lincolnshire County Council, this provides guidance and support for people who want to become more active and reduce reliance on medication. This programme has already been highly successful at the Meres Leisure Centre but will now be extended under Clive’s control with more opportunities for local people to access the support.

No Strings Badminton is a social game-play for anyone aged 16 and over no matter what their ability level. The aim of these sessions is to increase activity and also have fun.

Mr Henderson said: “At 1Life we are committed to helping people live more and live well and having a new health and wellbeing programme at Grantham Meres Leisure Centre is a fantastic way to do this. The three programmes that we are launching under the health and wellbeing service are just the start with more activities already in the planning stages.”

The £600,000 improvement works at the leisure centre are due to be completed by the end of August. They include doubling the size of the gym, the creation of a new group cycling studio, new changing rooms with lockers, cubicles and showers and the reconfiguration of the reception area. The investment has also included the development of a new Costa Coffee café which was completed in early May.

Anyone who would like to know more about the health and wellbeing service should contact Clive Henderson at Grantham Meres Leisure Centre on 01476 581930.
