A mystery hole which appeared two weeks ago in Castlegate has been filled in with concrete.

Part of Castlegate was closed off due to the subsidence because of a broken water main and diversions have since been in place.

A diversion has been put in place at the junction with Bluegate after a small hole appeared in the road in Castlegate.

Mark Heaton, area highways manager, said: “We are also installing a manhole which will enable us to isolate this problem and carry out further necessary investigations in future if required. We are currently expecting to tarmac the road and reopen it later on Monday, August 8. As a result of the problems we have experienced on Castlegate, we have had to postpone planned drainage repairs on Swinegate. These are to resolve problems with drainage of standing water, and are now expected to go ahead on Tuesday, August 9. Swinegate will therefore be closed to traffic from August 9 to 12. However, this will depend on completion of the works at Castlegate, and no unforeseen issues on Swinegate.”

When the hole first appeared between the junctions with Bluegate and Middlemore Yard it was just a few inches across, but hid a much larger void underneath.
