A student will travel to the United States next week to take part in the mock trial ‘World Championships’.

Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School student Evie Smith, 17, is one of 16 teenagers, and the only non-American, taking part in the trial in Orange County.

She is no stranger to mock trials, which are imitations of court proceedings, having taken part in several at KGGS. In fact, the school won a regional heat to reach the national finals in March.

On being selected for the competition in America, Evie said: “I was very excited. It was a shock as I had applied only seven days before the deadline. I am very interested in American law and history so I thought it would be good for that, and it’s the next level in the competition for me.”

Evie, who will fly out on July 8, will be involved in two days of intense competition in which she must take up the roles of the prosecutor, defence lawyer, defendant and prosecution witness. The case will surround a bank robbery.

Elaine Shipton, maths teacher and Evie’s mentor, said: “She deserves to do brilliantly.”

Evie has been reading up on American law as the courts operate differently to those in the UK. She will stay with a host family and in a hotel during the competition.
