Students at Walton Girls’ High School were able to put questions to a member of the House of Lords on Friday.

The aim of the visit by Lord Norton of Louth was to encourage students to become more engaged with the political and parliamentary process. Lord Norton met with A-Level Philosophy and Ethics students to discuss the work and role of the House of Lords. This was followed by a question and answer session on various aspects of the parliamentary process and life at Westminster generally.

The visit was arranged through the Lord Speaker’s ‘Peers in Schools’ programme, which has been running across the UK since 2007 and has so far involved around 75,000 young people.

Mrs McKeown, Teacher of Philosophy and Ethics at Walton, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to interact with someone who knows the parliamentary system thoroughly. I would highly recommend the House of Lords’ outreach programme to schools looking to increase students’ awareness and understanding of politics and the workings of Parliament.”

Principal Caroline Saxelby said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions on both the House of Lords and Lord Norton’s responsibilities”.
