A teenager who smashed CCTV was caught on footage taken by the camera.

Cameron Piers Howe, 18, of New Street, Grantham. admitted causing criminal damage to the CCTV equipment in William Street, Grantham, on January 5,

Prosecuting, Jim Clare said the damage was caused in a multi-occupancy building. He said Howe had gone in through the main door of the building with a group of other people. The CCTV was opposite the main door and Howe had gone up to it and pulled it down. The CCTV shows Howe pulling it of the wall. The camera fell to the floor and it was removed from the wiring. Damage was caused to the camera and to walls and internal doors.

Mr Clare said Howe told police he had pulled down the CCTV because he did not want anyone else to get caught.

Defending, Simon Cobb said his client had just turned 18 and he was a resident in William Street at the time of the incident.

Mr Cobb added: “He accepts it was entirely without sense and it was highly unsophisticated, particularly as he turned the camera on himself. He regrets what he did. There were others there, in drink, causing damage to the property. I think Mr Howe appreciates how stupid he has been.”

Magistrates handed Howe a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered him to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £15.
