Grantham mother 'elated' as book is finally published
A Grantham woman has finally had a novel published after 20 years of writing books.
Mandy Smart has written the first of what could be a three part series. The first book is called Draped by Deceit and is published by Pegasus.
The book is a coming of age story and aimed at teenagers and young adults.
Mandy, 55, had self-published the book under the pen name M. D. Charles but was delighted when a publisher finally stepped in.
The mother oftwo said: "The problem with self-publishing is that it was difficult to get it noticed outside Lincolnshire. I used to go to craft fairs and it did well there, but if I was going to get it out of the county it would have incurred a lot of expenditure.
Mandy, who works with people with learning difficulties, added:"I was elated when they said they would publish my book. I have been trying for years. The older I got the more I thought it's never going to happen, but it's all about perseverence. I have some good friends who have always believed in me."
Mandy says her book is a romance/mystery story. It concerns teenager Dan Trennan who is coping with the aftermath of his adoptive mother's death,. He turns for help to his estranged girlfriend, but events take over with tragic consequences.
Mandy said: "There are three books in the series and I would love to do a fourth looking back at a time before the first book. Pegasus have said they want first refusal on any future books.
"I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me through this and those who have bought the book. It has been a hard-fought journey."
The book is available in paperback from Amazon, Waterstone's, Pegasus and the Book Depository for £9.99 or as an e-book for £3.99.
