Graphic design course at Grantham College has led to so many careers
Column by Jaz Abeysekera, marketing manager at Grantham College
When you think of Graphic Design, what comes to mind? Some people think of it as a very niche area which won’t open many doors for people.
That couldn’t be further from the truth.
The Graphic Design course at Grantham College will have been running for 20 years come 2020 and has sent people off in a whole range of different careers and pathways. The course covers a variety of topics from illustration to web design and advertising to photography. Having completed the course myself back in 2008, I can speak from first-hand experience how beneficial it is to have such specific skills.
A vocational course where you are taught how to use programmes and software which are used in industry is one of the biggest and most useful things ex-students tell us when they move on. Starting university with more skills than those that have studied a range of different subjects gets you one step ahead of everyone else.
During the course I remember working on live briefs which gave first-hand experience of working with a client and taught me more than just graphics skills; people skills, negotiating skills and keeping a good rapport were all talents I didn’t know I needed to learn.
The course led me on to a degree in Advertising at the University of Salford and I now work alongside two other ex-Graphic Design students, one of whom is in my team as the college’s graphic designer and the other, a media lecturer. Other past students have progressed into a variety of careers from designing stage artwork for a world-renowned star, working in advertising agencies, teaching, freelancing, tattoo artistry; the list is extensive.
To celebrate 20 years of this skills-based course, I am organising a reunion alongside course leader, Dave Thomas which will coincide with the end of year exhibition. This will take place at the college on Saturday, June 13, 2020. If you’re an ex- Grantham College Graphic Design student, I’d love to hear from you!
