An investment of £750,000 will be made into the x-ray department at Grantham Hospital, it was announced today (Wednesday).

The hospital is to be the first run by United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust to have a fully digital radiology service once the development is complete in April 2013.

The money will pay for two digital x-ray rooms. One will carry out all x-ray examinations while the second will be a state-of-the-art hybrid room which will carry out both x-ray and fluoroscopy work, which uses live images to diagnose or treat patients.

Radiology services manager Paul Clark said: “Digital radiography is the big new development that is changing the way radiology is provided.

“We will be purchasing the best new equipment for these new rooms which will make the x-ray process quicker and easier. Patients are given a lower dose of radiation and the image quality is better.

“Digital equipment means that images can be taken and viewed on screen in seconds, rather than minutes, speeding up the process for the patient.

“This development will also allow Grantham to scan more patients and will bring patients back to Grantham who may have had to travel to Lincoln or Boston.”

The new digital equipment will replace the existing computerised kit which takes longer in terms of processing.
