Determined to give something back to colleagues suffering hardship, the nursing team held a raffle, tombola and an interactive game. They were inspired to raise money for Cavell Nurses’ Trust, the national charity that helps transform nurses’ lives when they are suffering personal or financial hardship due to illness, disability, older age or domestic abuse.

Ward sister Tracey Pemberton and sister Lucy Blakey organised the activities. Tracey said: “We had a brilliant day, the whole hospital came together as one big team and the staff had a lot of fun. We were thrilled to have raised such a good amount of money. We’re passionate about nursing and supporting all our nursing colleagues in any way we can so the team and I are pleased that this money will go to Cavell Nurses’ Trust to help a nurse who is suffering.”

Research carried out by Cavell Nurses’ Trust in 2016 shows that nurses in the UK are twice as likely as the general public to suffer financial hardship and two in five nurses say they have a physical or mental health condition expected to last a year or more.

John Orchard, chief executive of Cavell Nurses’ Trust, explains: “At some point in our lives we all benefit from the care and compassion of a nurse. But sometimes, nurses need help too. Last year we saw a 36 per cent rise in demand for our services and there’s no sign of that slowing down. We’re determined to help everyone who contacts us to get back on their feet in times of crisis, which is why we’re always delighted when people choose to help us be here for nurses by organising their own fundraising activity.”
