This is the team of 10 nurses responsible for caring for patients at the new £1.2 million St Barnabas ‘hospice in a hospital’ opening in Grantham next month.

The six-bed inpatient unit at Grantham Hospital, the first of its kind in the UK, will provide specialist end-of-life care for an estimated 160 people from the south-west area of the county each year.

For many, it will save them and their loved ones the journey to St Barnabas’s only existing inpatient unit in Lincoln.

St Barnabas’s general manager for the south Michelle Webb said: “We have appointed a first-class team of nurses to match the unrivalled healing and homely environment that has been created.

“As you would expect for a ground-breaking venture like this, there was a lot of interest from the pool of nursing talent that exists across Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties. We are delighted to have attracted a nursing team of this calibre. Their skills and expertise give us a strong platform on which to develop an exciting new model for the way end-of-life care is provided – and puts Grantham right at the cutting edge of best practice nationally.”

The purpose-designed ‘hospice in a hospital’ will open on Monday, September 8. It features six en suite rooms, each opening up into their own private grounds outside, and sharing a sun room and courtyard.

Michelle said: “The new unit is all about is widening local access to hospice services – offering all those living in the community with life-limiting illnesses a far wider choice of where and how they want to die.”

One of the new recruits, the unit’s sister Cathie Alcock, said: “It is an amazing opportunity for all of us to be involved at the very start of this new era for end-of-life care and to be able to contribute to its future success.”

The venture is a partnership between St Barnabas, South West Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group and United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

* The hospice is holding an open day on Saturday, September 6, between 10am and 3pm, which will allow the community to see the facilities on offer.
