Husband and wife step in to lead Grantham Business Club in 2019

A husband and wife have stepped in at the last minute to take over as chairman and secretary of Grantham Business Club.

Malcolm and Susan Swinburn stepped into the breach last night at the club's AGM, held at Belton Park Golf Club.

Malcolm was voted in as chairman and Susan as secretary. Kevin Swinbourne was voted in as treasurer.

They take over from another husband and wife team, Andy and Sue Hodgson who have both taken on the chairman's role over the past two years.

The business club sent out an email just hours before yesterday's meeting to say there was a 'crisis situation' as the chairperson elect for 2019 had had to drop out. At a club meeting in November, Sue Hodgson made a plea for someone to take over the reins, or else it would fold.

Malcolm and Susan are both well known in the town for their work with South Lincolnshire Blind Society where Malcolm is chief executive and Susan operations manager.

On being voted in as chairman, Malcolm told the meeting that he had come to Grantham 19 years ago and had become 'hooked' to the town. He said he had a backgrond in the armed forced before becoming a company accountant and working for an American oil company for 30 years. He said that in retirement he quickly became bored and took up a jon with the blind society which looks after 2,000 blind and visually-impaired people in the area. He added: "As a charity we are developing as a business and we are forming a trading arm which will hopefully become profitable."

Susan told the meeting she was Grantham born and bred and had worked in counselling roles in organisations including prisons and the NHS.

Kevin said he has lived in Grantham since 2008 and had served in the armed forces for 25 years. He now works for Barclays Bank and is still in the Reserve forces at the barracks in Grantham.
