A memorial to colourful Grantham character Ronnie Ward will be installed outside Grantham Crematorium Chapel, thanks to kind supporters.

The Journal launched a fund-raising appeal last month, asking readers to help us raise £702 for a 10.5cm x 7cm bronze plaque on a large granite book by the chapel’s rose garden.

The appeal was in response to a call from readers, after we reported that Ronnie – who was easily recognisable by his multi-coloured Mohican-style headwear – was to have a taxpayer-funded funeral which did not allow for any lasting tribute.

He died at his Riverside home in June last year, at the age of 69.

The wonderful team at Morrisons, and their shoppers, raised a fantastic £345.60. Donations of £225 and a Journal contribution of £131.40 will meet the target.

Thank you to everyone who contributed.
