With reference to the facelift of the Market Cross area, and the vitriol thus engendered, may I be permitted to delve into a spot of nostalgia – a state many of my fellow codgers delight in?

Many, many years ago the Market Cross was a meeting place for farm workers seeking new employers.

It was a place where these men from around this farming district could – in present day language – display their CVs to a Human Resource manager.

This muster of would-be workers would take place on Lady’s Day, - April 6th, I believe, and the lucky ones would find work and accommodation the chosen farming fraternity.

What a wonderful history the Market Cross has lived through, and cannot be besmirched by a loud-hailer, whosoever he be!
