There is a chance to meet the heroes of Grantham Town’s golden era tomorrow (March 14) when former players Bob Norris, Ernie Nixon and Ron Harrison take centre stage at the MCS Centre at South Kesteven Sports Stadium.

There will be a quiz, an auction of Nottingham Forest memorabilia and a fish and chip supper. ‘Referee’ for the night will be funnyman John Burns.

Grantham Town chairman Peter Railton will give an introduction, highlighting latest developments at the club as it makes progress towards emulating the triumphs of the past.

The event will raise funds for Grantham Carnival Association and the Grantham Journal’s Children’s Appeal and is being organised by carnival chairman Roy Wright.

Roy, who has been carnival committee chairman for 30 years and is a long-time Gingerbreads supporter, said the informal evening would be a great opportunity for supporters to discover more about the club’s most exciting era under manager Terry Bly.

During his reign, the former Peteborough United and Coventry City striker led his men to four Midlands League crowns, two Midlands League Cup triumphs, a victory in the Lincolnshire County Cup and FA Cup wins over Rochdale and Stockport County of the Football League.

Most memorably of all, Grantham Town entertained Jack Charlton’s Second Division Middlesbrough in the FA Cup 40 years ago, when the former England defender heaped praise on the non-league side. Included in the team that day were centre forward Nixon, who lives at Ancaster, centre half Harrison and inside left Norris.

Tickets cost £15 including the supper. The evening will raise funds for Grantham Carnival Association and the Grantham Journal Children’s Appeal. Tickets are available from the MCS bar or event organiser Roy Wright on 07796 183392.
