A FOOTBALL supporter who went missing from a Grantham Town match on Saturday afternoon was found dead at the sports stadium three days later.

The body of John Steans, 50, was discovered in the toilets at the South Kesteven Sports Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

Mr Steans, of Belton Lane, Grantham, told friends that he was going to get some food at half-time during the match against Leek Town. He never returned.

He was reported missing to police at 7.26pm that evening.

Three days later, just hours before his body was discovered, police issued a missing person appeal to the Journal.

A police spokesman said: “The circumstances of Mr Steans’ death and the fact that he had been reported missing are under investigation.

“We are still in the process of establishing the cause of death and the timeline from Mr Steans being reported missing to the discovery of his body at around 3.50pm on March 1.

“The circumstances surrounding his disappearance and the investigation that followed have been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.”

South Kesteven District Council, which owns the stadium, said Grantham Town Football Club is responsible for cleaning and locking up the building after matches.

No one at the football club was available for comment.

A statement from the club said: “Grantham Town Football Club was shocked to learn of the unfortunate death of supporter John Steans at Saturday’s game against Leek Town.

“The thoughts of the club are with his family and friends at this sad time.”

Mr Steans’ family was unavailable for comment.
