MR Alan Edward Baines, of Gorse Rise, Grantham, has died in Newton House Nursing Home, Barrowby Road, Grantham. He was 82.

Born in Grantham, the son of Ted and Hannah Baines, he was the fourth eldest in a family of 10.

He married Kathleen in 1953 and they had two daughters, Jean and Valerie. He was grandfather to Sara, Mark, Polly and Sophie.

After leaving the Boys’ Central School he started work as an apprentice fitter at Ruston and Hornsby. His National Service was completed with the REME.

He then worked for East Midlands Electricity Board for 19 years, followed by six years’ employment at Kontak. He returned to EMEB as an electrical fitter, retiring in 1987 due to health problems.

Mr Baines loved gardening and growing plants in his greenhouse; fuchsias were his favourite and he took great pleasure in giving them to family and friends. He also enjoyed crosswords puzzles and word puzzles, and watching documentaries and wildlife programmes on television.

The funeral service was held at Grantham Crematorium Chapel, conducted by Robert Holland.
