Have your say

MR Arthur John Sterry, of Alma Park Road, Grantham, has died at home. He was 77.

Born in Corby Glen in 1934, he was the eldest son of Fred and Ida Sterry.

He lived in the grammar school with his younger siblings, Alfred, Rita and Fred and attended the village school. He and his brother Alf were both choir boys at St John’s Church. In 1947 the family moved to RAF Leeming, due to his father’s posting in the RAF.

He settled in Grantham, where he became the father of three children from his first marriage, Dean, Mark and Julie, whom he raised by himself. He later met his partner, Christine, and spent 32 happy years with her and they raised their son James.

At the age of 15 he left school and took an apprenticeship with Copes, as a painter and decorator. On completion of his apprenticeship he undertook National Service.

On returning to civilian life, he and his brother Fred ran a successful painting and decorating firm, Sterry Brothers. For over 40 years they worked in and around Grantham, and it was often rumoured that together they had painted every council house in the area.

Over the years he and his partner have cared for many children and adults with learning difficulties, taking them into their home, helping and supporting them. He and Christine also enjoyed extensive travel, exploring many parts of the world.

Mr Sterry was an avid gardener and took great pleasure in tending his allotment, as well as supporting national athletics and his favourite football team.

The funeral service was held at Grantham Crematorium Chapel, conducted by Robert Holland.
