Mr Alan Roy Garratt has died at home. He was 72.

Born in June 1940, in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, he was the son of George and Marjorie. In 1949 the family moved to Countesthorpe, Leicestershire. He had a sister, Jenny and brother, Ashley. He met Erica and followed her to Burton Lazars and they were married in 1961. They had a son, Roy in 1962, followed by Adrian in 1968. They then moved to Melton Mowbray, where Mr Garratt had his own lorry company, transporting goods for Pedigree Pet Foods. Their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1971. In 1975 the family moved to Station House, Scalford, and the following year another daughter, Vivienne was born.

The family enjoyed many holidays to Bacton, Norfolk.

In 1991 the couple bought Knipton Post Office, where Erica ran the post office and Alan continued working for Scalford Construction, where he remained for 21 years. He then retired and set up his own computer company.

During their time at the post office they had to overcome a few break-ins, one involving a shotgun, and most recently Mr Garratt was injured with Samurai swords. He received bravery awards for these incidents.

In 1992 their first grandchild was born, later followed by seven more grandchildren. He and his wife loved having all the family round for Sunday lunches.

After selling the post office he and his wife retired to Pepperidge Farm, Castle Bytham.

The funeral service was held at Grantham Crematorium Chapel, conducted by Marion Roberts.
