MR Allan Rushby, of Barrowby Gate, Grantham, has died in Grantham Hospital. He was 77.

Mr Rushby was born in Pacys Court, Newark, Nottinghamshire, in September 1934. He attended schools in Newark and Farndon.

In 1956 he married Judith and they had four children and later five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In his earlier days he served in the Second Battalion Grenadier Guards, and was hugely proud of the fact he was part of the pageantry of the Queen’s coronation, and was on duty in The Mall in full dress uniform on that day.

During his working life he was employed at Ransome and Marles ball bearing company; British Rail; British Gypsum and Daloon’s, Newark. He took early retirement in 1994 due to ill health.

In 2000 he and his wife moved to Grantham.

Mr Rushby was very interested in wildlife. In his younger days he used to attend cycle races and used to race all over the country.

His main hobby was history and he did a lot of work with Nottingham University and Trent and Peak archaeology groups. His main interest was the Saxons and he researched the history of many churches and cathedrals, particulary Ely, and some monastries. He was a founder member of Farndon History Group.

Mr Rushby was a keen gardener. He also enjoyed holidays with his wife, particularly to Scotland and Devon.

He had a great affinity with people and consequently forged many wonderful friendships. He was a real people person.

His other interests were classical music and opera.

The Rev Peter Hopkins conducted the funeral service at All Saints Church, Barrowby. Cremation followed.

Funeral arrangements were by Robert Holland, St Catherine’s Road, Grantham.

Donations were received for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.
