MR Jack Bond, of Ermine Street, Ancaster, has died at home. He was 77.

The son of Charles and May Bond, of Long Street, Great Gonerby, he was born in Grantham Hospital, the youngest of six children.

He attended Great Gonerby School.

In September 1955 he married Pamela, and they later had two children Ian and Sandra and four grandchildren, James, Carolyn, Jason and Nicholas.

After leaving school he worked as a fireman on steam trains before completing his National Service in the Army in Malta. He later returned to the railways.

Mr Bond then worked at Hillview Hospital as a stoker, until moving to Grantham Hospital as boiler operative and union representative. He remained there for 24 years until his retirement at the age of 48, due to ill health.

As a boy he sang in the choir at Great Gonerby Church and before his health problems he sang in pubs, clubs and talent contests. He twice had auditions for the television show Opportunity Knocks.

He was also a member of the Merry Makers Concert Party, who entertained for charity.

Mr Bond enjoyed fishing, gardening and jigsaw puzzles. He liked family get-togethers for a barbecue or at Christmas.

He took foreign holidays to many European countries, including Madeira and Malta and he also visited Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The Rev Alan Littlewood conducted the funeral service at St Martin’s Church, Ancaster. Burial followed in Ancaster cemetery.

Botherway, Wendy Beck, Gaye Plant, Alan Bond, Raymond Bond, Venna and Geoff Bradley, Wendy Cannon, Neil and Sandra Good, Mrs Dear, Pamela Morrell and John Money.

Funeral arrangements were by Robert Holland, St Catherine’s Road, Grantham. Donations were received for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.
