MR James Nelson Mitchell (known as Nelson), of Harrowby Road, Grantham, has died in Grantham Hospital. He was 84.

Mr Mitchell was born in Lockerbie, Scotland, one of seven children.

The family moved to Grantham in 1934.

He married Milly in May 1947 and they went on to have two children, Janice and Jimmy. His wife, Milly predeceased him.

Mr Mitchell eventually met and married Sylvia, and this brought Sandra, Susan and Sharon into the family. He had many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He loved his family and was devoted to them.

After leaving school he joined the Army and served in Africa and Egypt. He also served as a dispatch rider.

When he left the Army he spent time as a lorry driver for the Prudhoe Co-op and Clover Dairies in Grantham.

He then went into partnership with his father in a car body repair shop in Union Street and worked there until the early 1980s when he retired due to ill health following heart surgery.

His interests were gardening, taking holidays and spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching motorbike racing and wrestling on television.

He loved his dogs, Gypsy, his old labrador, and more recently Rags.

One of his proudest moments was when he gave his youngest granddaughter, Michelle, away at her wedding.

The funeral service was held at Grantham Crematorium Chapel, conducted by Robert Holland.

Gilbert, Pat Brookes, Marjorie Sargent, Cheralyn Taylor, Pamela Whitehead, David and Linda Mitchell, Laurence and Kathryn Richard, Ashley Pope, Julian Parker, Carol and Peter Baker, Tony Hook, Mrs Punshon, Caroline Punshon0, Susan Baxter, Ivan Roughan, John and Jean Barber, Mick Hoyes, Zena Toulson, David Hoyes, Agnes and Matthew Kelly, Keith Lamyman, Colin Key, Ted Carter, Kathryn Baxter, Simon Taylor, Val Taylor and Laura Flood.

Funeral arrangements were by Robert Holland, St Catherine’s Road, Grantham.

Donations were received for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.
