MRS Elsie Mary Levett (nee Martin), formerly of Rectory Lane, Harlaxton, and latterly of Newton House Nursing Home, Grantham, has died. She was 91.
Born in Ilford, Essex, she was the daughter of Charles and Oenia Martin and sister to Hilda.
From Ilford County High School, she was evacuated as a clerk with the Prudential Insurance Company to Torquay, Devon. It was there that she met Reg, who would later become her husband. They were married for over 60 years.
She was a lance corporal in the ATS, stationed at Orsett, and drove lorries. Following a trip of mercy, a newborn child was named after her.
After bringing up her children, John and Ann, she began training at the age of 40 at Stockwell College, Bromley, to be a primary teacher. Specialising in music, she taught at Normandy Primary School, Kent, for over 15 years.
In her retirement she joined Horham WI, and developed her interests in painting and sewing and creativity flourished.
She moved from Horham to Harlaxton and did a tremendous job caring for her husband Reg.
Latterly, while in Newton House, she made cushions for the 2012 Olympics and kept the staff ‘on their toes’.
Mrs Levett leaves her two children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren in England, Switzerland and Africa.
The funeral service was held at Grantham Crematorium Chapel, conducted by Sheila Harris.
