MRS Madeline Avis Coffin MBE, of St Andrews, Grantham, has died in Lincoln County Hospital. She was 74.

Mrs Coffin was born to Jack and Marjorie Luesby in Great Ponton as one of two children, both daughters. She was sister to Jacquie.

Her first job was with British Railways as a secretary. After this she moved to the George Hotel as a receptionist.

At age 18 she joined Grantham Hospital as a nursing cadet and qualified as a staff nurse in 1958. Three years later she was promoted to Sister serving on various wards throughout the hospital. 1973 brought further promotion as she became assistant matron and surgical unit nursing officer.

Following reorganisation, she then served as senior nurse in charge of surgical services. Her final posting was as ward manager to the new day ward where she had the extra responsibility for ward 6 and the intensive care unit.

She retired after 42 years in 1997. Later that year she was appointed a Member of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

While working at the hospital, Mrs Coffin met her husband Jack, then a patient, and married him in 1976.

She took great pride in her garden, and was a keen artist as she painted water colours and drew sketches. Mrs Coffin was also very fond of animals and supported many charities aiming to help them.

As well as a member of the Nurses Guild, she was part of the Beswick Collectors Club and the Jane Austin Society.

The service was held at the Grantham Crematorium Chapel and was conducted by Robert Holland.
