MRS Viola Mary Jones, of Commercial Road, Grantham, has died in Grantham Hospital. She was 87.

Mrs Jones was born in Merton, Oxfordshire in 1924.

After leaving school at the age of 14 she began working in service in Oxford.

During the war she trained as a pastry cook, working at the local army camp in Ambrosden, where she met Arthur Jones, who was a barber at the camp. They were married in 1944 and after the war they travelled around the country before settling in Harlaxton, near Grantham.

Mrs Jones worked on the land for over 15 years while raising three children. She loved the countryside and spent many years at her allotment, growing herh own fruit and vegetables.

She took up judo in 1954, later forming Springfield Judo Club with her husband, where she soon became a black belt instructor.

After moving to Great Gonerby she worked as a pattern cutter at Wolsey and Company Limited in Gonerby Hill Foot, later leaving to form a co-operative clothing company along with other former Wolsey employees.

Mrs Jones retired to look after Arthur, who died in June 1987.

She liked quizzes and doing crossword puzzles and continued to cultivate her allotment until become ill herself in 2007.

In the last 25 years she travelled several times to Australia to visit her many relatives there.

Mr E. Fytche conducted the funeral service at Grantham Crematorium Chapel.

Funeral arrangements were by Co-operative Funeralcare, Bridge End Road, Grantham.

Donations for Macmillan Cancer Support amount to £232.85 to date.
