Shoplifter ran from Grantham shop, hid in a wheelie bin - and then stripped off

A shoplifter jumped into a wheelie bin and stripped off in a bid to evade capture by police.

Lincolnshire Police said the man ran out of Sports Direct, on the Augustin Retail Park, on Saturday at around 1.25pm.

While officers were searching for him, he reportedly hid in a bin on Wharf Road and stripped off. He then ran off and was caught on nearby Grantley Street.

In a tweet, Sergeant Dan McCormack said: “Male shoplifter ran from staff before jumping into a wheelie bin and removing all his clothes to evade capture....rubbish hiding spot and he was arrested shortly afterwards.”

The man was arrested on suspicion of theft of a pair of black trainers, valued at £40.

He was charged and appeared before Lincoln Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty and received one day’s detention to be served in the court building.
