People hoping to get their hands on some top quality china won’t need to go far after a new shop opened in the market place last week.

Chris and Eric Woolley opened NO14 on Westgate last Thursday, which will sell collectables, including Moorcroft, Lorna Bailey and Anita Harris, along with items from the Royal Albert and Beswick collections. They will also specialise in china replacements.

Chris, 69, who retired from being a secretary at Grantham hospital 10 years old, said: “I’ve always had a passion for china ever since I was a little girl. I used to collect it throughout my childhood.”

Despite only being shop owners for a few days, the couple, who are due to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary this year, are no strangers to collectables. Chris added: “We’ve taken part in various antiques and collectables fairs across the country for a few years now. Although we plan to attend a few more fairs, we will be concentrating mainly on the shop from now on.”

It’s already attracting business despite being only open a few days.

Eric, 75, who retired from Fenland Foods in May 2007, said: “We were very busy on Saturday with people coming in to either just ask questions or buy something. We could barely move at one point. As we are a small independent shop, we can be very competitive and as many of the dealers know us, we are able to sell many items at a much better price. We are the only shop to sell art deco animals by Anita Harris. Other than that, they are only sold at fairs, so people would be getting a really unique item.”

When they are not manning their shop or travelling to fairs, the couple enjoy going on cruises and are due to go on their 36th cruise later this year. Chris added: “Although we’ve received lots of support, some people thought we were mad to open up a shop in retirement, but we think its the perfect time.

“I love what I do. My only rule is that I’ve got to love the china as well. That way, if it doesn’t sell, then I don’t mind living with it. I’m finally living my dream.”

NO14 is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9am-4pm and on Saturday between 8.30am and 4pm.
