An exclusive set of stamps showcasing the migratory birds that come to the UK every spring and summer have been released by Royal Mail.

Illustrated by renowned Irish ornithologist Killian Mullarney, one of Europe's best known bird artists and whose work has been featured in the Collins Bird Guide, the 10-stamp set is expected to be snapped up by both stamp collectors and nature lovers.

Bird migration, says Royal Mail, has fascinated and baffled naturalists for centuries and the stamp designs showcase the diverse range of birds that embark on the perilous journey annually to come to the UK.

Every year a variety of species from sea birds to birds of prey overcome numerous hazards including inclement and extreme weather, food shortages and predators to cross between their breeding and non-breeding grounds using pre-defined routes called flyways.

Montagu's harrier, a nightjar, swallows, swifts and the turtle dove are among those selected for their own stamp in the collection.

David Gold, Director External Affairs and Policy for Royal Mail, said: “The migratory journeys of the birds featured on these stamps are truly amazing.

"Their annual travels have fascinated and baffled naturalists for centuries. It is only now that we are beginning to understand what drives and maintains this amazing, high-risk–high-reward behaviour. We hope that these stamps ignite a new interest in this remarkable phenomenon.”
