New Year’s message: Mayor of Grantham Ian Selby

Councillor Ian Selby writes:

It always appears to be the case that those who have the least give the most.

While helping the town’s firefighters with their Santa’s Chrismtas float this year I saw generosity in abundance by those who are least well off in our community.

I also see it with our local shops and businesses. It’s always the smallest businesses that contribute most to assisting our local charities during these difficult times.

Big business make vast profits and if they gave the same percentage of support to the local community then our local charities would function so much easier.

It would be very encouraging if more of our larger businesses were a little more generous and kind-hearted. Just like Ebenezer Scrooge in ‘A Christmas Carol’, they might have a change of heart and achieve a sense of redemption at this festive time and in the New Year.

I ask you to support the companies that most support our local community; it should work both ways.

To those who contribute the most to assisting our local good causes, many of them doing so week after week, as the Mayor of Grantham I offer most grateful thanks.

Wishing you all a very prosperous New Year.
