Mr Frank Derrick Whiting, of Lancaster Gardens, Grantham, has died at home. He was 83.
He was born in Queen Charlotte’s Hospital, London.
Mr Whiting was married to Sue for the past 31 years.
He has two daughters from a previous marriage and grandchildren James, Hannah, Jessica and Megan.
At the age of 16 he joined the Army and served 10 years with the Royal Engineers Survey Corps in Egypt, Jordan and Cyprus.
He joined the Co-operative Permanent Building Society in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, on demobilisation from the Army. He became assistant manager at the Leicester branch (now known as Nationwide BS), and on promotion to manager, he worked at the branches in Rugby, Kidderminster, St Albans and finally Stevenage with Letchworth. Mr Whiting retired in 1987.
He had a lifelong passion for steam railways, steam traction and rail travel. Mr Whiting was also an avid collector of model coach and buses, with expert knowledge of the workings of public transport.
He was a member of the Rotary Club of Grantham (Paul Harris Fellow), with 35 years’ membership in total at St Albans and Grantham.
The Rev David Shenton conducted the funeral service at St Anne’s Church, Grantham, followed by cremation.
