Mr Robert Anthony English (Bob), of Edward Street, Grantham, has died in St Edmunds Nursing Home, Grantham. He was 73.

Mr Robert Anthony English (Bob), of Edward Street, Grantham, has died in St Edmunds Nursing Home, Grantham. He was 73.

Born in Grantham to Harold and Edith English, he was one of five brothers. His brothers have predeceased him.

In 1967 he married Mary at St John’s Church, Grantham. Their only daughter, Alison, was born in 1971.

He was educated at Bedford Modern Boarding School, followed by the Boys’ Central School, Grantham.

On leaving school he attended Caythorpe Agricultural College, then spent some time at Marston Farm, near Bourne.

After spending five years in the Royal Air Force, he took employment at Aveling Barford.

He then worked for Walkers Steel and finally at Newton House Nursing Home, where he was a gardener.

In his younger days he played cricket for Great Ponton Cricket Club as a left-handed fast bowler and was in the A League.

He also played for Aveling Barford’s table tennis team.

Mr English was an avid reader and he loved tending his allotment, something he had done for 36 years.

Robert Holland conducted the funeral service at Grantham Crematorium chapel. Cremation followed.
