Olympians Sir Steve Redgrave and Colin Jackson were guests at this year’s Summer Cup at The Meres in Grantham.
The athletes met students at the school sports event on Wednesday which is held every year by the David Ross Education Trust which runs 33 schools throughout the region including Charles Read Academy in Corby Glen and Ingoldsby Primary School.
Sir Steve is a five-times Olympic gold medallist in rowing and Colin Jackson is a world champion hurdler and Olympic silver medallist.
More than 1,500 aspiring athletes from the primary and secondary academies took part in athletics, swimming, table tennis, tennis, boccia, sportshall athletics and hockey tournaments at the South Kesteven Sports Stadium and leisure centre.
Students had prepared for the competition since the start of the spring term, with training sessions and athletics clubs taking place before and after school.
Rowena Hackwood, Chief Executive Officer at DRET, said:“The Summer Cup is just one of the annual highlights of the Trust’s exclusive sports programme, which offers outstanding opportunities for our students.
“It was truly pleasing to see the students compete with such pride and passion, and I was so impressed by the amount of talent showcased throughout the day. Everyone who took part should be extremely proud of their efforts and achievements.”
