Say ‘Grantham Carnival’ and my eyes glaze over.
To most people it is an event that happens in the town for two days every June. To me, it has become a way of life that I think about every day.
As a community event, it really does work and every year I see family and friends meeting up to enjoy the music, the laughter and the whole entertainment that the carnival provides, from the annual and very rare street parade to everything else on offer in Wyndham Park. And the best part is that a lot of it is free of charge to families.
An insight into the carnival costs may surprise you and show why we continue to fund-raise.
So here goes...marquees, tables, chairs and a stage cost £3,000, toilets £1,000, arena acts £3,000, marching bands £1,500, bands to play in the marquee £2,500 and public liability insurance £900. Generator hire and first aid are among all of the extra bits and pieces we have to cover.
The true cost, if it wasn’t for the generosity of local firms and businesses, would be more in the region of £30,000.
We are fortunate to get a grant from South Kesteven District Council of £6,000 – without this the event would be in doubt.
Just a quiet word about the parade, which has seen massive changes since the halcyon days. Legislation has meant a change of route, it has meant the loss of many of the lorries for the floats and the police have decided it’s all too much for them, so keeping the parade going has been quite an achievement. We can, however, see signs of increased interest in taking part, with this year’s parade larger than last.
Please turn out and support everybody who has made the effort to take part.
Finally, here we are with another carnival upon us – we are ready for it and hope to provide a weekend of community spirit and togetherness. Enjoy!
