Children, staff and parents at Ropsley Primary school have been inspired by a visit from Paralympian Sam Ruddock.

Track and field athlete Sam, 25, talked about his journey to Paralympic success and how hard work and dedication are helping him overcome the odds on his road to Rio 2016.

Sam was born prematurely and his lower limbs were affected by cerebral palsy as a result. This has never held him back and from an early age he took a keen interest in sport. His talent was spotted and Ruddock was quickly brought through the talent identification ranks by British Athletics.

Within months of training he was awarded his senior international debut for the Great Britain Paralympic Athletics team that would

Year 5/6 teacher Keith Leader arranged for Sam to visit the school with the help of the Inspire+ sports charity. He said: “It’s such an exciting thing for the children to be able to hear from someone like

Sam.”

Headteacher Ann Cook said: “We believe it’s important the children have opportunities like this, to meet positive role models; people who are overcoming the odds to achieve success in whatever they are passionate about.”

Pupil Henry Wharton, 9, said: “I went to watch the London 2012 Paralympics with my family and the athletes were amazing, really cool and so good at their sports.”
