Plans to clear the site identified for a multiplex cinema in Grantham have moved a step closer with news that a planning application has been submitted for a purpose-built club on land next to the Welham Street multi-storey car park.

The new build, if approved, will become the new base of the Grantham Senior Citizens’ Club. Its current building in St Catherine’s Road will be demolished as part of the ambitious plans for a multiplex and restaurants, making up a leisure quarter.

Senior citizens’ club advisor Ted Foxall said: “Once a decision has been made on the application and we have a written agreement that the council will build it, the club will move to a temporary home at the Jubilee Life Centre whilst construction of the new club takes place. The club will get a new building for the benefit of our members and the wider community who use the facilities.”

Leader of the council Councillor Bob Adams said: “Getting an agreement that frees up the Grantham Senior Citizens’ Club site on St Catherine’s Road would be a major step forward in progressing our development plans.”

Councillor Adams added: “Whilst the work on clearing the site for development has been progressing we have taken the opportunity to make sure we are getting the best outcome for the town and the council’s investment.

“We are committed to providing Grantham with a multiplex cinema which we believe will provide a massive boost to the night time economy and be a springboard for the regeneration of the town centre. We intend to progress this as quickly as we can whilst ensuring we get the very best value for money.”

A spokesman for existing Grantham cinema operator, Reel, said: “We understand that the council has certain procedures to undertake before a project can go to the next stage, and trust that these can be completed as soon as possible.”

Councillors are expected to make a decision on proposals for the development by early summer.
