Police are urging motorists to remain vigilant after two thefts from insecure cars in Grantham on Monday.

Between 1.30pm and 2pm a purse was taken from the front seat of a Volkswagen Golf parked in Asda in Union Street while the owner returned their trolley.

A similar incident was reported later in the day, at 3.34pm, at Morrisons in the Isaac Newton Centre when a handbag was stolen from the unlocked boot of a Renault Clio, again as the owner returned their trolley.

Grantham Community Inspector Gary Stewart said: “These two incidents show how quickly these offences can happen and how criminals will use any opportunity, no matter how limited the time frame they might have.

“It is so easy to just leave your car unlocked while you step away from it for a short period of time but please remain vigilant and make sure you lock up when you are away from your vehicle, no matter for how long.

“We are investigating both of these incidents and looking at whether they are linked. If you were in either supermarket car park around the time of either offence and saw anyone acting suspiciously then please ring us on the non-emergency number 101, quoting either incident number 262 or 292 of 24th August 2015. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
