FEWER officers will patrol Grantham town centre on Saturday nights as Lincolnshire Police aims to make pub, club and bar owners more responsible for the actions of their customers.

Lincolnshire Police will be re-deploying officers away from the town centre and into neighbourhoods on Friday and Saturday nights as they aim to concentrate more on burglary and anti-social behaviour and less on policing problems caused by alcohol.

At the same time, officers will be putting more pressure on licensees to stop serving alcohol to drunk people and to take more responsibility to prevent crime.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said the same amount of officers will work Friday and Saturday night shifts but will be deployed away from the town centre.

The spokesman said: “Why put 80 per cent of our officers dealing with drunk people when there are people being burgled in the rest of the town?

“We only have finite resources and the number of officers certainly isn’t going to increase in the future.”

What do you think? Will less police officers in the town centre lead to more problems or will Operation Acrolein help improve the behaviour of town centre revellers?
