Nick Boles MP has said it is ‘incredibly flattering’ but ‘totally ludicrous’ that he has been named in a list of Britain’s 500 most influential people.

The Grantham and Stamford MP was included in the list published in last weekend’s The Sunday Times, in association with social etiquette publisher and luxury lifestyle brand Debrett’s .

The minister was named in the unranked list alongside acting stars like Oscar-nominated Benedict Cumberbatch, sporting heroes David Beckham and Lewis Hamilton, and fashion designer Stella McCartney.

In the politics section which excluded national party leaders and cabinet members to enable ‘more thought-provoking choices’, The Sunday Times stated in reference to Mr Boles: “His ministerial post in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Department for Education put the ambitious Tory in charge of implementing gay marriage and issues of LGBT equality.”

Speaking to the Journal, Mr Boles said he had no idea about the list until it was mentioned to him by several colleagues at Parliament.

“It is incredibly flattering, although of course totally ludicrous!” he said. “But when you are in this game you must take the compliments when they come, as they are few and far between. Hopefully it is an indication that the recent changes have had a positive impact.”
